This came out of absolutely nowhere to me which I find incredibly surprising. For one thing, I am a rabid At The Drive-In fan and as such I follow The Mars Volta with a mixture of admiration and resentment for what rose out of that band’s ashes. (I’ve even got that Defacto stuff) Plus I’m an avid music blog/magazine reader on top of whatever press releases I get anyways. In theory Lopez shouldn’t have been able to release an album on a high profile label like Stones Throw without me hearing about it until the day of its digital release. But that is just what he did. I love when industry emphasis on opening numbers pays off for the rest of us. As we crawl towards Dear Science’s September 23rd release date the big whigs are probably wondering how they can get those numbers up and make it look like a success, because as we all know winners only buy things that are already established as winners in their own right. “How! Oh how can we dam the stream of illegal downloads?” they murmur through their night terrors.
The answer of course is by offering tiny perks that appeal to and distinguish early adopters from their boring and practical brethren, in this case a limited edition lithograph poster designed by none other than TVOTR’s own Tunde Adebimpe. Jay Reatard has apparently never heard that story about the Tortoise and the Hare. It was only a week ago that the garage-punk released his last effort from his Matador singles series and he’s already announced the next.
Reatard’s fifth release in the series contains three brand new tracks: “Trapped Here,” “Hiding Hole” and “DOA.” If you’re lucky enough to nab one of these ultra limited babies you can be enjoying the single as soon as August 19th.
